The Prison Book: Alcoholism/Addiction – A Life Sentence by Tamara Segars Ott is the story of an alcoholic who is stuck in the endless loop of a battle with her addiction and her need to recover. This is the story of Marley Thomson Marx, a woman from an affluent family whose connections gave her many opportunities to do what she wanted and achieve what she desired in life. However, this also gave her plenty of opportunities to experience things that she should not, such as alcohol. But she does and becomes addicted to alcohol with no end in sight to her addiction.
Years go by and Marley’s career and relationships are getting stronger, but so is the urge to drink more. No matter where she turns, no matter wherever she goes, her addiction is always there to ruin her life one more time. Becoming a mother and a successful woman has given her something else to think about, but now her days of drinking have finally caught up. Riddled with a deadly disease, she is reminiscing over the old days, revisiting her old days and seeing where she went wrong. What would have changed the course of her life? What could she have done to save herself?
This is a heartbreaking tale of a woman who falls into a cycle of addiction and sees no end in sight. Marley was a strong woman in so many ways, yet she was weak when it came to her addiction. Her struggle was real and how she dealt with it was commendable. Tamara Segars Ott handled the topic very well; she let Marley come to life and explored her story. Every page brought something new and made Marley become real. I enjoyed the fast pace of this well-written story and how well-developed it was.”
