Cheltenham, PA – July 17, 2018 – Susan Joy Gross, a retired teacher from Philadelphia, discusses the aftermath of the loss of a spouse in her book “Someone Used to Love Me: A Positive Walk through the Loss of a Spouse.” The book aims to help people who are suffering from depression and loneliness, especially the ones who have lost their spouses. The book is now available on the Amazon store.

The book was written after Gross lost her husband in 2003. They were married for forty-one years and had two children. She met him when she was 14, and he was 16, at a teenage dance in 1957. The two shared a lasting love, since then. The author writes about her journey into widowhood, a phase in her life she has not prepared for.

“Nothing prepares you for widowhood. Not a rough childhood, divorced parents, a mother with health and financial stress, or raising a child with special needs. Changing gears and going on seems overwhelming and impossible. Working through the confusion, depression, and imbalance is extremely difficult. Finding your new frame of reference is impossible when you have trouble concentrating. Going through this huge loss makes it very hard to concentrate so writing a book with rules was out of the question.” said Susan Gross while talking about the book.

She further said, “I want to help ease the burden of those who have lost their loved ones, in a difficult coming to terms with the loss.” The book’s simple poetic style walks through the emotions and validates reality. The beautiful illustrations give the book a lighter feel. Through this book, the author wants to show her support by targeting the truth. The new reality is not a simple walk in the park but it’s a work in progress. The book’s format is totally different than anything out there. It is not preachy at all.

The author also acknowledges that people going through loss need to know that they are not alone. She said that slowly digesting the experience is a way of finding strength and realizing that you are safe. Furthermore, she wants to promote positivity, no matter how hard it is to find in a difficult time, such as during a loss of a loved one. She wrote the book to discuss her own experience with grief and its aftermath, highlighting the difficulties she has gone through and the ways she has coped and moved forward.
