But, if they don’t ask for a raise or promotion, they are perceived as not having leadership skills.”
A PeoplePerHour survey found that self-employed women earn almost 43% more per hour than employed women and nearly 7% said they earned 90% more than they did as a traditional employee. Johnston believes that one of the best ways that women can overcome this pay gap is by going freelance and cites the fact that the number of highly skilled freelance mothers has nearly doubled in the last ten years and their wages have exponentially increased.
“According to the twenty-seventeen ‘Freelancing in America’ survey, seventy-one percent of freelancers are women,” says Johnston, “but from our competitive analysis, we know that nearly all of the freelance experts offering courses are men. This has to change and we’re going to be the ones to change it.”
Freelancer Foundry offers free and paid courses, educational materials, and access to a Facebook Group that helps women empower each other, network, and build off their successes. According to Johnston, women need to think about the various models of networking and develop those ties and practices that can help people jumpstart a career that not only enables them to be their own boss but have time leftover each day to truly live.
