ATLANTA, GA – August 9, 2018 – Teachers throughout Georgia will begin 14 days of fasting on August 13th to draw attention to the issues facing Georgia public schools with the goal to obtain pledges from this year’s Gubernatorial and legislative candidates to fully fund Georgia schools for the next four years. Some teachers will fast for the full 14 days while others will join for shorter periods; all educators will continue teaching during the fast.
In 2018, Georgia public schools were fully funded for the first time in 16 years. This marks a new beginning for Georgia schools and is already having a positive effect on the safety and education of the students of Georgia. Our next Governor will decide if this was a one time anomaly or a start of a new tradition for Georgia. Educators, students, and parents alike will advocate in 14 different ways beginning August 13th to continue full funding for four years. “I believe in students and closing achievement gaps. I believe that it is our responsibility to educate our students with the resources needed.” – Jen Ray, Georgia Teacher who will be fasting for one day.
Hunger strikers include teachers and educators from Gwinnett, Fulton, Morgan, and Richmond Counties.
Educators will fast between August 13th and August 26th with others joining in activities throughout the 14 days. In support of those educator’s efforts, an open letter from clergy members will be sent to our legislators on August 16th. In addition, phone calls to elected officials, a teachers’ day of service, and artist support day will all culminate in a March for Education at Old Fourth Ward Park on August 26th.
On August 13th, some fasting teachers including Alex Robson, 2017 Gwinnett Middle School Teacher of the Year, will be speaking to members of the media about the impact of school funding on Georgia’s classrooms.
