Mayors Recognize Value in “Go the Extra Mile” Volunteer Spirit

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – October 4, 2018 – Mayors in all 50 states will recognize extra-mile heroes in their communities and declare Extra Mile Day on November 1. A growing movement dedicated to highlighting the power of volunteerism in connection with the “go the extra mile” message, Extra Mile Day and its popularity in the U.S. continues to soar. Created in 2009 with 23 inaugural cities, over 550 mayors are expected to make the 2018 declaration.

In association with Extra Mile America, mayors from both sides of the political aisle are coming together to remind people of the significant impact and difference-making contribution that volunteers make locally through their extra-mile efforts.

“Extra Mile Day is an awesome reminder that each of us has the power to create positive change,” shares Shawn Anderson, the visionary behind the day’s declaration. “It could be volunteering at the local animal shelter, mowing your neighbor’s lawn, or simply telling the grocery clerk ‘thank you for your smile.’ Going the extra mile can happen in a thousand different ways and it is in doing that little bit more where a positive difference is made.”

First spreading the “go the extra mile” message across the U.S. in 2009, Anderson used a symbolic 4,000-mile ocean-to-ocean bike ride. On the solo ride, the non-bicyclist interviewed over 200 people who had been identified as going the extra mile in overcoming setback or who had risked everything in order to accomplish something extraordinary. After the 90-day tour, Anderson personally gave away $10,000 to those people whose stories he found especially inspiring. It was from there that Extra Mile Day was created.

Anderson concludes, “Extra Mile Day is more than one day during the year to recognize ‘go the extra mile’ heroes; it is a reminder that the moment we individually choose to ‘go the extra mile’ and give more of ourselves is the exact moment where our communities start to change for the positive, and we, too, have a chance to be a difference-making hero.”
