December 5th, 2018 – Taipei, Taiwan – From recreating the sound of classic Stradivarius violins, to detecting fake banknotes, to weaving flexible solar cells into clothing, the Future Tech Expo 2018 exhibition will reveal startling breakthroughs in metallurgy, chemical engineering, materials science, and novel materials – innovations that could change our lives in the near future. The event runs from December 13 to 15, 2018 at Taipei World Trade Center, Hall 3 in Taipei, Taiwan. The main organizer is Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Future Tech Expo 2018 aims to make cutting edge research in chemistry and new materials accessible and understandable to all of us, and to help us see how these concepts can offer us a brighter future. Future Tech Expo 2018 will also demonstrate the innovative and practical research strengths of Taiwan, and recognize the efforts of scientists and researchers. Future Tech Expo 2018 will reveal Taiwan’s revolutionary breakthroughs in chemical engineering and new materials.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report for 2018, in the “Innovation ecosystem component” category, Taiwan ranks number one in Asia and fourth globally for its innovation capability (after Germany, the United States, and Switzerland).
Research highlights: ancient musical instruments, wearable power, and magnetic gears
By combining the material analysis of wood and the spectral analysis of musical instruments, scientists at National Taiwan University are uncovering the long-hidden secrets of ancient instrument makers. Ultimately, the work may allow modern instrument makers to reproduce the sound of these classical instruments.
A team from National Taiwan University is developing techniques to make flexible electronic devices from eco-friendly renewable materials. Patents have already been applied for, and practical applications are already being tested – including making flexible fabric and clothes that can generate electrical power from light.
At National Cheng Kung University, researchers have developed a revolutionary magnetic gear box. By doing away with traditional mechanical gears, the technology protects motors from wear and tear, and also allows extremely precise control of the gear ratio – providing obvious potential benefits in cost, efficiency and endurance. Almost 400 teams of researchers submitted their work for inclusion in Future Tech Expo 2018. A total of 81 revolutionary R&D projects were chosen to be shown at the exhibition.

The Future Tech Expo 2018 showcases Taiwan’s innovations – in areas such as artificial intelligence, green energy, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and nanomaterials – which are vital to people’s livelihoods and to the development of society and an industrial economy.
