More than four months after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, Airbnb is banning house parties and limiting the number of guests to prevent the spread of the virus.

The company has said residences, with few exceptions, will have to limit occupants to 16, and is following the company’s criticism of the UK Bed and Breakfast Association.

Airbnb added that it would take legal action against guests and hosts if they broke the rules.

“Although guesthouses and guesthouses have been closed since March 23, it appears that these giant platforms have made it possible to make reservations and activate so-called ‘lockdown parties’, which put guests, hosts, neighbors and communities at risk, ”said association president David Weston.

“It is high time that these global platforms take some responsibility for the safety of their customers, their hosting and show some respect for the local communities.”

In its statement, Airbnb described “the introduction of a global ban on parties and events” as being “in the best interest of public health.”

He added that while 73% of his lists already ban parties, some hosts allow small party gatherings for baby showers or birthdays.

However, the company said some customers are adopting “bar and club behavior” in the residences they rent out through the platform.

“We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we don’t want this type of business, and anyone who is engaged or authorizing this behavior is not on our platform,” he added.

The company also recently announced that it would start testing a ban in the UK for those under 25 who had less than three positive reviews of renting homes, which had already been tested in the US and Canada. .

Last November, the company said it was banning “party houses” after five people were killed at a Halloween party in San Francisco.
