Rainmaker Worldwide Inc.’s (OTC: RAKR) deal with the Carlaw Group Ltd. to address the severe water crises across Africa is not only significant for Rainmaker and the people in those communities, but will benefit Sphere 3D (NASDAQ: ANY) once its announced merger with RAKR gets completed. Thus, while Rainmaker made the news, the story is also substantial for Sphere 3D.
According to a release last week, the agreement will leverage Carlaw Group’s critical infrastructure projects in Africa. To advance those initiatives, Rainmaker, soon to be a Sphere 3D asset, will deploy its innovative Air-to-Water technology to bring water on-demand to communities lacking access to environmentally safe drinking water.
The project results can have an enormous impact on the local population, with the partnership soon able to distribute newly-produced fresh water through a proposed water distribution agreement within the mining and construction sectors as well as through a bottled water operation using Rainmaker’s hybrid energy Air-to-Water solutions. According to Rainmaker, the partnership, once fully deployed, could reach USD 50 Million annually.
Terms of the deal call for establishing a Joint-Venture subsidiary in Africa with a 51%/49% ownership Rainmaker/Carlaw that will implement Water-as-a-Service (WaaS) solutions in Kenya, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. It will further establish an urban initiative to work closely with the private sector and global humanitarian organizations to identify the areas experiencing severe water scarcity and then define appropriate and innovative solutions.
The agreement will also prove how Rainmaker’s technology can provide cost-effective water on-demand on an industrial scale to the world’s most water-scarce regions. The alliance will leverage Carlaw’s extensive relationships and working experience throughout Africa to provide direct access to critical infrastructure partners and industrial sectors to deliver massive offtake opportunities for its Water-as-a-Service solutions.
By 2021, this good news passes through to Sphere 3D, which may present a compelling value opportunity at current valuations.

According to the United Nations Water website, 97% of the world’s water is seawater or otherwise undrinkable in its current form. This leaves 3% of water as fresh-water, and of this small 3%, 2.5% of it is frozen solid in arctic glaciers. Effectively, this means that humans, animals, and plants rely on 0.5% of the world’s water for survival, creating a tremendous need for effective purification and distribution solutions.
Further to water supply deficiencies, in 2010, over $260 billion in economic losses were attributed to inadequate water supply and sanitation.
