In A Real San Francisco Story. With Pets, Eric Curry shares his most authentic self.

Curry begins his tale with his identity as an animal-lover. This is a theme woven throughout Curry’s story, being both his motivation to do well in school and the inspiration behind his first business. The reader is introduced to the different pets Curry had growing up, and why he believes EVERYONE Should Experience the Unconditional Love of a Pet.

From there Curry talks about his journey as a scholar, from performing diabetes research at UCSF to studying chemistry at UCLA and UC Santa Barbara, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college. Curry emphasizes the importance of learning as a life-long habit, instead of one ending when one’s formal education does.

Next we learn about Eric Curry the entrepreneur. Here he gives the reader a peek into the mindset of a business owner and his strategy for being as efficient with his time as possible. Curry also tells us about starting his pet care business out of his two-bedroom apartment during college, and shares his five step system for beginning any business.

In the fourth chapter the reader learns about Curry’s experiences as a person of mixed-race. We learn about his mother’s journey immigrating to San Francisco from El Salvador when she was eighteen. Curry shares the dilemma he faced trying to decide which box to check next to ethnicity on his college applications and the profound impact of seeing other biracial Americans representated in politics and the media.

Curry then tells us about the struggles he faced accepting himself, growing up in a very conservative household. Curry shares why he believes it is so important to come out of the closet and why he is committed to attending a Pride event every year for the rest of his life. Curry also shares a song he wrote simply titled Pride.

Finally, Curry culminates his tale by telling us about the neighborhood he grew up in and his father’s side of the family. He shares the emotions he felt upon first witnessing the changes in his beloved City. Curry ends his book with a community call to action, urging the reader to imagine what we could accomplish if we all contributed to the change we wanted to see.
