“A book for our time, and for all time,” says Gail Evans, CNN Executive Vice President. “Young People of the Pandemic” is an anthology written by 10 to 21-year-old Americans living through the 2020 COVID-19 crisis. Over 120 stories, anecdotes and poems illustrate what a socioeconomic and racially diverse young population thinks of our country’s current troubling situation. Their journeys through the turbulence of uncertain times are recorded with written work displaying resilience, courage, honesty and humor.

“We often wonder what our children are thinking. Nelson’s collection offers a fascinating and honest understanding of how the pandemic affects them in their own voices. At turns sad and uplifting, painful and hopeful yet always a window into their minds and hearts,” writes Susan Newman PhD, social psychologist, Psychology Today contributor.

Nancy S. Nelson, editor of this anthology, has been a practicing Art Therapist in New York City for 37 years. Trained at Mount Sinai Hospital, she was on staff for 16 years at New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Child Life Center. She compiled this book from March 2020 to July 2020 with a network of teens and young adults using social media to obtain submissions from 37 U.S. states. The entries are multifaceted; from a suburban New York 10-year-old’s story about her drive-by birthday parade to a Massachusetts 20-year old’s poem which ends, “And when the outside world wakes from her rest, When the fair comes to town again and the families flock to the parks, When places of worship are filled with choirs of rejoice, When students take their spots at their desk with refreshed minds, Remember that it was never just the places that were special. It was the people within them that made it extraordinary.”

The goal of this compilation is to inspire readers, aged 10 to 110, with accurate accounts of what it is like to be a member of Gen Z in a nation attempting to conquer the greatest crises of our time. These are voices of hope that will be remembered throughout history.
