May 20 – June 3, 2021

May 26, 2021 – A New York-based team called The Push, founded by artist Jim Xu, has responded to the brutalization of AAPI communities by calling on artists to share the lives and stories of these groups. The result is a rich, emotional show that is bursting with beautifully crafted works of all media, on view currently at High Line Nine in Chelsea, NYC. The opening event was the evening of Thursday, May 20th and featured a live music performance by Jenny Huang and Jennifer Ahn.

The Push Exhibition is currently open to the public and features a total of 12 talented artists from around the globe, each deeply involved in the effort to raise awareness against anti-AAPI violence. Artists include: Chloe Yee May, Chris Buzelli, Dik Liu, Guno Park, Jiannan Wu, Jim Xu, Jingyi Wang, Julie Benbassat, Rie Hasegawa, Webson Ji, Weixian Jiang, and Yuqi Wang.

Artist and founder Xu has a particularly poignant drawing featured, entitled “Slashed;” this realistic portrait shows Noel Quintana, a hate crime victim who was cut across his face with a box cutter while boarding a train in Brooklyn. Another set of works, hyper-detailed relief sculptures from Jiannan Wu’s series “Country Love,” feature intimate tableaus of life in northeast China. Webson Ji’s paintings from his project “Black Water” use a powerful high-contrast monochrome to reflect how his emotions have swayed throughout his stay in the U.S., while Jingyi Wang uses bright colors and whimsy in her paintings of anthropomorphized cacti to express the impact human activity has on nature.

The Push Exhibition will continue throughout AAPI Heritage Month from May 21st – June 3rd. Gallery hours are from 12-6 pm at High Line Nine (507 W 27th Street, New York, NY). The Push is donating 30% of proceeds from art sales towards AAPI non-profits and AAPI small businesses.
