According to Mong, repetitive high-volume manufacturing has been offshored to China, Vietnam, and other locations; the companies that are left in the United States serve a higher purpose that began with mass customization for consumers. Project based products unique to each customer have grown significantly now that the technology is able to support it. Mass customization has transitioned to the B2B customer.
Mong shared, “The mass and repetitive manufacturers use ERP software which builds all the manufacturing tools for high-volume manufacturers; they know their supply chain procurement and production schedules. For a project-based manufacturer, projects are the core of what they do and that tends to not be included in their business system that sits outside of the ERP system. When they try and integrate all that back into the ERP and start to manufacture things a big mess ensues. The results typically drive the uses of multiple systems, multiple applications, and tools to do the things unable to accomplish with an ERP system.”
Mong recently spoke with Dirk Dusharme host of Quality Digest Live in a recent interview to discuss project-based manufacturing and processes and the unique set of circumstances not usually experienced by make-to-stock manufacturers.
