CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE – NOVEMBER 18, 2021 – A herniated disc in the neck is essentially a problem with one of the cushions between the vertebrae that comprise your spine.

Generally, the spinal disc has a soft, jellylike center that sits within a strong, rubber-like exterior. Also known as a ruptured disc or a slipped disc, the herniated disc occurs when there is a tear in that outer portion and some of these nuclei push through the tear.

Note that the herniated disc can occur in any area of the spine. It irritates the nerve and based on where the herniated disc is, you could suffer pain and numbness in your hands or legs.

Most people who have a herniated disc don’t show any symptoms right away. Often, the problem doesn’t require herniated disc surgery to resolve the pain. Usually herniated disc therapy will help resolve the problem and allow you to get back to normal.

Most herniated disc cases occur in the lower back. The signs they see will depend on where the problem is, as well as how badly the herniated disc is pressing on a nerve. The signs will also most likely affect just one side of the body.

Pain in the arm or leg: If the herniated disc is on the lower back, the patient will most likely feel some pain in their calf, thigh, and / or backside. There could also be some pains in their foot. On the flip side, a herniated disc in your neck leads to pain in the shoulder and arm. The individual could find that the pain will shoot to their leg or arm when they sneeze, cough, or move in certain positions.

Numbness or tingling. People who have a herniated disc often have radiating numbness or tingling in the body parts served by the affected nerves.

Weakness. Muscles served by the affected nerves tend to weaken. This can cause them to stumble, or affect their ability to lift or hold items.

Some patients go through this process without any herniated disc symptoms. In these cases, the patient will need an x-ray to even know they have a herniated disc or not. However, it is much better to resolve the problem before the pain starts to occur.

Most times, herniated discs are caused by gradual, age-related wear and tear of the discs. This phenomenon, known as disc degeneration, is the result of age. The discs become less flexible and are more prone to rupturing with the slightest strain.

Most people won’t be able to ascertain the cause of a herniated disc. Sometimes, using the muscles in the back – as opposed to those in the thigh and leg – to lift objects can cause a herniated dis too.

ABOUT HERNIATED DISC IN THE NECK

Herniated Disc is the result of a rupture in the fibrous outer portion of a spinal disc. This forces the core to squeeze out, creating a disc herniation. Think of it like a jelly doughnut that gets squeezed causing the jelly to ooze out.
