The 9th Chinese Enterprise Green Compact Forum, guided by the Administrative Office of Alxa League, co-hosted by the SEE (Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology) Conservation and SEE Foundation, and supported by Shenzhen Aleshan Foundation, was successfully held on June 5, 2022. With the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Business for Nature (BfN) as global partners, the forum is focused on global climate change and corporate green actions, in an effort to discuss how to jointly address climate change and contribute to future-oriented green competitiveness under the new circumstances.

China and Chinese enterprises are at the center of the world’s green transformation

In the opening remarks, Erik Solheim, the Sixth and former UN Environment Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that China is the center of green transformation in the world today, as are enterprises. When it comes to the future, he hopes that Chinese enterprises will continue to follow the route of high standards, global cooperation, nature-based solutions, and fair transformation, and play more key roles in green transformation.

Tubuxin, Secretary of the Leading Party Group and Director-General of the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Alxa League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, said that since the establishment of the SEE Conservation in 2004, the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Alxa League and the SEE Conservation have forged an environmental friendship. The “100 Million Suosuo” program have greatly improved the carbon sequestration capacity of the region and contributed to the mitigation of global climate change. “Groundwater Conservation” program promotes sustainable economic development, helps farmers increase income, and contributes to both ecology and economy.

Sun Lili, the President of SEE Conservation, emphasized that it will be a challenge for enterprises to seize the technological innovation and industrial opportunities brought by climate goals and foster  new energy for growth.  The member companies of SEE Conservation will keep on the path of green development, participate in the practice of biodiversity conservation, and make their own unique contributions.

Liu Jian, Director of the Science Division, United Nations Environment Programme, appealed that the realization of the dual-carbon goal requires consistent effort in all walks of life, and the creation of new value and new jobs in the process of achieving green transition.

The enterprises have great potential in synergistic carbon neutral governance

When talking about how to synergize carbon neutrality governance, Prof./Dr. ZHOU Hongchun, Department of social development researcher of the Development Research Center of the State Council, analyzed China’s policy orientation in carbon neutrality, and put forward effective suggestions for enterprises to reduce carbon emissions, and enhance coordination and efficiency of pollution reduction; he believed that circular economy is an important entry point for enterprises to reduce carbon emissions.

Zhou Qiulin, Researcher at the Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources, shared his insights on how to improve the role of blue carbon in carbon neutralization. He said that by repairing degraded and lost blue carbon ecosystems and increasing their storage capacity, an additional 800 million tons of carbon could be absorbed each year by 2030, equivalent to 3% of annual global carbon emissions. And each of us is responsible for promoting and supporting such a goal.
