Peterborough, U.K. – With the pandemic causing a huge rise in people working from home there has been an increased demand for people wanting to convert their garages into habitable spaces. In fact, over 25% more applications for these developments were made last year alone in the UK.
With the cost of living increasing a trend is showing that people are now much more likely to stay in their current home and invest in converting a garage or spare room than they are to put it on the market and move.
“We have been completing garage conversions for many years now but I have never seen it so busy,” said Mr. Featherstone, Managing Director of Peterborough Improvements, a home improvement and property maintenance company based in Cambridgeshire.
“We have seen a three-fold increase in the enquiry rate for our conversion services and due to this demand have decided to open up a new garage conversion company in Stamford and are looking to continue to expand further into Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire later in the year.”
It has to be said, the garage conversion market is changing dramatically as more and more people are looking for specific types of spaces, particularly since the pandemic.
According to Mr Featherstone, attached garages have been popular recently because they are perfect for converting into home offices and playrooms while detached conversions have gained more popularity as entertainment rooms or home bars with more and more people entertaining at home rather than going out.
He went on to say that “Planning permission isn’t usually necessary as garage conversions generally fall under permitted development, but it’s best to check with your local authority before you start any project. Either way you will need to follow building regulations to ensure you don’t have any issues later should you decide to sell your property.”
Sarah Rush, who works for a landscaping seo company, converted her run-down garage into a new office and says it has made a huge difference to her mental state whilst working from home.
“Previously I found it so difficult to split my working life from my home life and it did start to get me down.” “ I decided to invest in a new office by converting my old garage and the difference it has made is huge.”
“The work took around 4 weeks in total to complete and that included newly insulated walls, new flooring, plastering, new electrics, a radiator, bricking up the front where the garage door was, and installing new Bi-fold doors… I absolutely love it”.
