Veteran entrepreneur and community leader Steve Kent wears many hats.  Not only is he an experienced entrepreneur but he is also a compassionate philanthropist.

Steve Kent, who is well known for his leadership roles in Newfoundland and Labrador, was recently appointed as the Canadian Board Chair for Give A Mile, a crowdfunding platform that enables folks in their final stages of life to connect with their loved ones.

An active proponent of positive change and sustainable growth, Kent has been an active part of the Canadian political landscape in the Atlantic provinces.  His relationship with philanthropy and volunteerism is deeply rooted, and he previously served as National Board Chair and Chief Commissioner for Scouts Canada and National Board Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada.

According to Steve Kent, “This innovative charity touches lives in the most real ways and at the most critical junctures.”

Speaking of the promising potential Give A Mile holds for communities across Canada, Kent says, “The impact of visits from loved ones for those in their final days is profound.  I’m inspired by the unlimited potential to multiply our work through the entire country.”

“The ingenuity of the crowdfunding model and the compelling stories from those whose lives have been forever changed by flights from Give A Mile, made this leadership role irresistible,” says Kent.

Speaking of Give A Mile’s ambitions, he adds, “There are billions of frequent flyer miles sitting idle in Canadians’ accounts — our mission is to harness those points balances to provide those in their final stage of life with a visit from a loved one.”

Give A Mile was founded in 2013 in Calgary, Alberta.  It is a registered Canadian charity that enables access to travel between people and their loved ones in the final stages of their life.  Their model is primarily based on crowdfunding micro-donations of frequent flyers and loyalty points from various donors.  Give A Mile has supported over 900 families by providing them with flights of compassion since its founding in 2013.

Give A Mile’s founder Kevin Crowe believes that the addition of a seasoned non-profit leader like Kent will allow the charity to broaden its horizons and expand its impact.  With Give A Mile providing hundreds of flights every year, Crowe feels that the time is ripe to extend the charity’s talent pool and prominence.

Grateful to the volunteers supporting Give A Mile, Crowe says, “Over the years we have built a powerful and unique platform, and did so entirely through the efforts of volunteers.”

He adds, “We have changed many lives and have inspired a large group of Canadians to give real purpose to their spare frequent flyer miles.  Now, with an even stronger team in charge, we can multiply our impact across the country.”
