Development is the eternal theme of human society. To materialize a better and more sustainable future, the UN General Assembly has carried forward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a blueprint covering social inclusion, clean energy, responsible consumption, popularising public services, and other critical fields. It is a great attempt to settle issues facing our development from three dimensions—social inclusion and economic growth – to deal with the post-crisis challenges.

Since 2022, the world has witnessed accelerating changes unseen in a century. Poor and vulnerable countries face multiple challenges in public health, geographic crises, and climate change. For the second year in a row, the global is no longer making progress on the SDGs. More and more countries are aware that the green industry is critical in economic structure adjustment. The traditional industrial development model should be converted to a new sustainable path. Only in this way can we utilize the energy more efficiently to promote green recovery.

China is always the responsible supporter and contributor of the SDGs, upholding sustainable development as our national strategy. In 2022, China’s SDG Index ranked 56 among the 163 countries, up one place from last year. So far, China has completed SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG4 (Quality Education). We are making progress in SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and our progress on SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) remain the same level.

China has attached great importance to the green economy and climate change adaptation. We focus on sustainable development according to the national situation and social reality and actively advocate green and low-carbon ways of life. Xiongan, as the pilot city to achieve “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality”, has actively implemented the national deployments and decisions to achieve the “dual carbon” strategy. The city has vigorously promoted energy structure transformation, improved the intellectualization and green transformation of traditional industry, applied new technology, material, product, equipment, and technique, and constructed green, low-carbon, and intelligent buildings, so as to create a city suitable for living, working and travelling sustainably. So far, green building areas have accounted for 100%, which has broadened the path to building an ideal city with sustainable competitiveness.

HIDW, co-developed with the Xiongan New Area, is the promoter of our vision: “to build a city that people long for”. In the past four sessions, HIDW has gathered global design power to find a new model and path for the sustainable development of Xiongan, the city of the future. Sherly Feng, the commander of HIDW and the chairman of SIDA, suggested that industrial design can significantly accelerate sustainable development featured “low-carbon and green transformation.” According to her, combining industrial design innovation and city development, in particular, will significantly promote energy efficiency, reduce waste, and solve other problems facing Xiongan’s green and sustainable development.

HIDW 2022, themed “Design Vitalizes the City the Future,” has proposed promising insights on sustainable development to empower the city. We have invited the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the leading country in transportation, energy, building, and industry, whose sustainable infrastructure has played an important role in lowering carbon emissions, as our partner country. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the Netherlands. It also marks a milestone for the Xiongan New Area entering into large-scale construction. In this case, we chose the Netherlands as HIDW’s partner country, aiming to share our views through mutual communication. We will discuss how to use design empowerment to promote green techniques and products, develop a green economy among the enterprises in Hebei province, and maximize sustainable resource utilization and instant environment improvements. This way, we can lay a solid foundation to build a sustainable Xiongan in the post-pandemic era.
