Randwick, NSW, Australia – Blue Tea Kitchens and Bathrooms, www.bluetea.com.au, a leading Australian interior design company, is today delighted to announce that for the second year in a row, their team of experts has been nationally recognised at the KBDI Awards 2018. The company is proud to announce that Blue Tea designer Laura Poilly won the award for the best small kitchen in NSW. She also won the people’s choice award (Australia wide). The people’s choice award is shared with the digital audience of Complete Homes, and more than 20,000 votes were collected.

The KBDI (Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute) present their prestigious and much sought after awards annually. After several months of analysing all the entrants, the judging panel choose three finalists for nomination in the following categories: Small kitchen, Medium kitchen, Large kitchen for Australian states.

The judging panel is made up of industry specialists, in 2018 the kitchens were judged by Sussana Bilardo, Lisa Chapman & Rina Cohen who critiqued every entry before coming up with a list of finalists for each category. Entry into the KBDI awards is comprehensive. The judging panel will look at the following criteria to make their decision; Design brief and inspiration, ergonomic and practical solutions, aesthetics, sensitivity to the existing architecture and materials.

The main goal of Laura’s winning kitchen was to satisfy the client’s desire for a very minimal look while respecting the integrity of the house they loved. The kitchen was to be the “Modern Federation Entertainers Delight.” The client wanted a better flow to the space, seamless drawers, clean lines & uncluttered and integrated appliances. They also wanted to incorporate a feature timber slab that showed reference to their dining table. Laura made the skylight a feature too which was previously hidden in the old kitchen design. She opened up the floor space by having an island that was accessible from the living and dining room space. The latest technology from Blum was used to provide seamless touch sensitive drawers.

Laura created an open flowing and minimal space. Large horizontal wall cabinets keep the visual distraction minimal. A carara marble splashback with brass inserts is a key feature of the kitchen. The marble pays reference to the marble in the entrance of the house; however the brass inlay design is contemporary and unique. Cabinets are minimal to create a fresh look, but the capping above it provides reference to the houses original heritage architecture. Green marble was selected too, and what at once seems a bold design move, this also pays reference to the heritage green tiling in the bathroom that was to be renovated. However, combining it with slick white cabinetry gives the green marble a new spin. Darker aubergine coloured joinery houses integrated appliances and a hidden workbench and pantry (for the small appliances). Brass feature handles were used to offset the aubergine colour.
